Webserver Tournament – April Update

Tension is building in the 5th Webserver Final; Mark Eldridge is still leading with a score of 4.5 followed by Terry Taylor in 2nd place. Antony Balshaw, the current champion, is also on the move with a win against Terry.

In the 6th Webserver Tournament there has been a rush of results with all Group winners now being decided:-

Terry Taylor has won Preliminary Group 21 with a score of 8/10 and Ian Mason has taken 2nd place scoring 6/10.

Allan Gardner is the winner in Preliminary Group 22 with a superb score of 9.5/10, Peter Hurse is in second place with a score of 8/10.

In Group 23 Mark Slupski has won with Peter Tibbert in second place.

John Dunn has won Group 24 with a score of 9.5/10; Alex Tupper and David Howell are contesting 2nd place in what is proving to be a real cliff hanger.

Les Ellis has won Group 25 with a score of 8.5/10 followed by Eugene Raby on 8/10

Congratulations to all players who have qualified for the 6th Webserver Final due to start in September and thank you to everybody else for contributing to what was a close fought and action packed competition.

BCCA Medal Tournaments Start

The start list for the 2011 BCCA Medal Tournaments have been announced. The winner of each group will receive an engraved medal of the appropriate colour with S-B tie break being used where required.

The 1st and 2nd placed players will also earn points towards the new BCCA Titles which will be formally launched in the next magazine issue. All games will be BCCA graded and players must maintain their BCCA membership throughout the tournament. Continue reading BCCA Medal Tournaments Start

Selected Openings Tourney Counter Gambit

In the Counter Gambit Selected Openings Tournament, there are double pairings where each player will play two games , one with white and one with black , against each of the other competition. In each game Black selects the opening from the above list . In other words in each pairing of two games each player chooses the opening in the one game where he has Black.You can choose any combination of counter gambits , from the same counter gambit in all games to four different counter gambits.

The four choices for 2010-11 are,

1. Winawer Counter – Gambit: 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 e5
2. Henning – Schara: 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c5 4.cxd4 cxd4
3. Adelaide Counter – Gambit: 1.e4 e5 2.f4 Nc6 3.Nf3 f5
4. Bellon Gambit: 1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.Nf3 e4 4.Ng5 b5

The competitors this season, are S.E. Cranmer, D. Richardson, E.E. Wright, C.D. Gallimore and J. Thornton. There are no results as yet.

Selected Openings Tourney Gambit (Section A)

The 2010-11 Selected Openings Tourney Gambit (Section A) features four fighting gambits where each player will plays two games against each other but in each game the player of the White pieces chooses which gambit line they wish to play. Any combination of gambits may be chosen from,

1. Sicilian – Portsmouth Gambit, 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.b4
2. Max Lange, 1. .e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.d4 exd4 5.0-0 Bc5 6.e5
3. Urusov Gambit, 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 Nf6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nf3 Bb4 +
4. Chatard -Alekhine Attack, 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 Be7 5.e5 Nfd7 6.h4 !

This tournament is contested by, D. Grobler, L. Brook, E.E. Wright, F. Clough and B. Thompson.

Selected Openings Tourney Main Theme

The 2010-11 Selected Openings Tourney Main Theme is the Queens Indian Defence Modern Main Line from the position after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 b6 4.g3 Ba6 5.b3 Bb7 6.Bg2 Bb4 7.Bd2 c5 with White to play.

This is a double round tournament contested by, D. Grobler, R. Crawshaw, B.A. Wood, C.D. Gallimore and J. Thornton.


Championship 2010-11 Update Feb 7th

‘William Mason’ Championship results are reported by Dave Grobler, we have our first results in the top section with a couple of draws being reported in the games Hill v Eastoe and McMahon v Eastoe. Other recent results to be added to our previous update are,

Handicap Tournament Results

The Handicap Tournament is one of the main tournaments for BCCA and attracts a large number of players each season, this keenly fought tournament utilises an attractive scoring system to give players of all standard an opportunity to compete against each other in this unique event. Last season the tournament was won by by P. Terry who played 16 games with 13 wins and 3 draws, this season the tournament is being led by Stephen Clark who finished in the top 6 last time around with A. Reed, M. Mullinger, R. Bradney and A.D.
