Tips to save money on postal costs, and more…

Dear Neil,

I read the Yearbook from cover to cover and found it to be informative and entertaining. I would like to thank you for your words of encouragement over the past couple of years. You will recall I was considering downscaling the number of games I played throughout the year, but then you told me about the British Ladies Championship (of which I was unaware); in my first year of play I came 4th out of 4, last year I came 3rd out of 5 with which I was well pleased. They are tough games against the likes of Valerie Craven (she has won the Title many times) and Sue Howell (another extremely strong player).

I also entered the Handicap tournament last year, for the very first time, and did better than I thought, finishing 14th. I duly intend to improve on that over the next year or so.

Finally, when the membership fee went up to £11, it is at first a daunting thought “it’s gone up again”. BUT, if one looks at it this way, it is LESS THAN 22p per week so, if anyone else has that thought about fee increases, think of it as less than the price of a 2nd class stamp. Get the old coffee jar or cocoa tin out, pop in 25p per week, and you will be in profit at the end of the year! That’s how I look at it.

The Royal Mail will be increasing the price of stamps again in April. But quite a lot of mail gets through without being stamped or franked by the Post Office and I have saved an awful lot on costs by re-using those envelopes. Also, if the franking mark hasn’t caught the stamp, they can, with care, be peeled off and re-used especially the self-adhesive ones.

Best Wishes
Stephanie Lawrence

William Mason Championship

The BCCA ‘William Mason’ Championship for 2010-11 is our premier event and determines who will be the club champion each year. The Championship is a promotion tournaments and this season we have a Championship section, four ‘Candidates’ sections and a five ‘Reserves’ sections.

You can view the latest tables here.

The Championship itself is still wide open with just a handful of results report to date. Led by L.G. Eastoe but all players still have enough unreported results to win this one. The Candidates comprises four sections with the winner gaining the chance to compete at the highest level. Candidates A is led by Stan Grayland on a very impressive 4/4 whilst Candidates B is led by our President Jonathan Rashleigh. Candidates C & D demonstrate the difference between web-server play and normal post or email move transmission. Both of the these sections are being played on the web-server and almost all games are completed whilst the non web-server events are still wide open. Candidates C is led by Anthony Balshaw on 7.5/9 whilst Candidates D is led by David Coyne on 8.5/10 closely followed by Antony Cannon with 6.5/8.

The five Reserves sections are also split between web-server and postal play, the three postal sections are wide open although Reserves A is led by A. Copsey 5/5, Reserves B is led by P. Hulse 3/3 and Reserves C has M.E. Hardwick on 2.5/3. The web-server sections have more games completed, Reserves D is led by Dr. M.R. Wilson on 8/8 whilst Lawrence Rhodes leads Reserves E with a fantastic 10/10, very well done!
